In an Era When Labels Chase Followers and Algorithms, Independent Songwriter Gianluca Zanna’s Songs Are Being Picked Up the Old-Fashioned Way — by Human Program Directors, One Radio Station at a Time

In 2026, the music industry has largely surrendered to two forces: streaming algorithms that decide what to recommend, and follower counts that decide who matters. Songs have become content. Artists have become brands. Labels chase TikTok virality the way 1990s labels chased radio adds.
The song itself — the actual melody, the actual feeling, the actual moment of human emotional connection — has slipped from the center of the conversation.
Zanna Records is moving in the opposite direction. And the numbers say it is working.

On May 24, 2026, the Zanna Records Worldwide Radio Airplay Master List stood at 399 stations across 88 countries. Eleven days later, on June 4, 2026, that same list closed at 415 stations across 94 countries. Sixteen new stations. Six new countries. No press tour. No major-label partnership. No paid playlist promotion. Just songs, traveling on their own.
On the same morning, the @GianlucaZannaMusic YouTube channel ticked past 31.5 million total views, with 13,500 subscribers and a monthly YouTube Music audience of 1.36 million listeners. May 2026 closed as the best single month in the channel’s history:
5,014,379 views in 31 days — an average of 161,754 views per day.
The Return of the Song

In the 1990s — the last era before streaming algorithms dominated music distribution, songs crossed borders on their own. A Swedish band called Ace of Base became one of the best-selling acts of the decade after Danish music executive Claes Cornelius and his label Mega Records championed them to radio program directors around the world.
There was no TikTok dance. There were no follower-count meetings. There was a song called “The Sign” that program directors heard, decided was a hit, and put into rotation. From Stockholm to Soweto to Sydney, the song traveled one human curator at a time.
That model has not disappeared. It has simply been forgotten by an industry chasing the dopamine economy of viral 15-second clips.
Zanna Records is its return.
The continuity is not metaphorical. It is direct. Claes Cornelius, the same executive who introduced Ace of Base to the world, is currently co-authoring his biography with Gianluca Zanna’s, titled “All That I Wanted”, a reference to the Ace of Base song that became one of the defining tracks of the 1990s radio era. The architect of one of the last great organic radio successes has been an active collaboration with the artist now rebuilding that model in 2026.
The Radio Growth

Independent labels rarely cross 100 stations. Most never cross 300. Zanna Records was founded in 2022 by Italian-American songwriter Gianluca Zanna from his off-the-grid ranch in the middle of Arizona's wilderness, with no roster, no distribution machine, and no radio plugger network. Verified airplay began with a handful of stations.
By May 14, 2026: 386 stations across 87 countries.
By May 24, 2026: 399 stations across 88 countries.
By June 4, 2026:
415 stations across 94 countries on 6 continents, independently verified by WARM (World Airplay Radio Monitor) and Songstats.
The growth rate is not slowing. It is accelerating. And every station, every country, every play is the result of an independent human curator choosing one song over thousands of others.
The 6 Newest Countries (in 11 Days)
🇨🇺 CUBA | Radio Progreso | Havana |
🇬🇶 IRAQ | Alrasheed FM Baghdad 91.5 | Baghdad |

The YouTube Growth
The streaming numbers tell the same story in different units. As of June 4, 2026, the Gianluca Zanna Music YouTube channel reports:

In His Own Words

“For twenty years, this industry has been telling artists to chase followers, chase algorithms, chase virality. Nobody talks about chasing a great melody anymore. Nobody talks about writing a song that makes someone in Bissau or Baghdad or Pristina stop what they are doing and listen.
But here is what nobody is saying out loud: that model never stopped working. We stopped using it.
In the 1990s, Ace of Base became one of the biggest acts in the world because Claes Cornelius believed in a song. Today, Claes inspired my music journey. The torch did not go out.
It was just put down. I picked it back up.
31 million was milestone one. 50 million is next. And the song is back at the center.”

What This Means
Independent music in 2026 is largely shaped by two forces: streaming algorithms that boost what is already winning, and viral moments that briefly spike and quickly decline. Zanna Records’ growth fits neither pattern.
Verified airplay across 415 stations in 94 countries cannot be bought, paid for, or boosted.
Each station, each program director, each DJ is an independent decision-maker selecting one song over thousands of others. When 16 of those decision-makers in 6 new countries — on three continents — all select the same artist within an 11-day window, the explanation is not algorithmic.
It is human. It is the song itself doing the work it was always meant to do.
That is the difference between a campaign and a catalog. Campaigns end. Catalogs compound. And songs — great songs, the kind people remember twenty years later — outlast every algorithm currently in production.
What’s Coming Next
On June 21, 2026 — the summer solstice — Zanna Records releases a worldwide dual edition of “You Are My Destiny” featuring three-time Grammy-nominated keyboardist Joseph Wooten (Steve Miller Band, The Wooten Brothers).
July 2026, Zanna will publish two books. The first, “Desert Signal,” is a guide to how an independent artist with no industry infrastructure built a verified global radio footprint from a high-desert ranch. The second, “All That I Wanted,” is Zanna’s experience meeting and finding inspiration with his mentor friend Claes Cornelius, former Mega Records co-founder, the man who took Ace of Base global in the 1990s. The book traces the through-line from one organic radio model to the next.

A Closing Thought
Algorithms optimize for what already exists.
Songs create what was not there before.
The industry forgot the difference. Zanna Records remembered.
31 million was milestone one. 50 million is next. And the song is back at the center.
