Original written 21 years ago spreads organically through Cuban and Latin-American creators, reaching nearly 2.9 million followers in a single week

Arizona — June 15, 2026 — “Cuba Libre,” an original song written by Gianluca Zanna back in 2005, is having a second life. Over a single four-day window this month, 22 different TikTok creators built new videos around the track — reaching a combined audience of roughly 2.88 million followers, according to analytics platform Songstats.
What makes the surge notable is how it happened: organically. There was no paid campaign behind it. The song spread the way songs used to spread — person to person, creator to creator, because people connected with it.
The pickup clustered heavily among Cuban and Latin-American creators. Accounts such as Historias de una cubana, la dictadora puig LBMA, La Quinta De Hialeah, Ivelisse Vázquez, Maripily, and MayraCenteno — many flying Cuban, Italian, and Nicaraguan flags on their profiles — carried the song into the Spanish-speaking diaspora through cultural affinity rather than advertising. The largest single boost came from creators Aga Sobczak (1.1 million followers) and Mila Syrena Swimwear (703,000 followers).
“The Return of the Song”
For Zanna, the moment fits a thesis he and Zanna Records collaborator Claes Cornelius — co-founder of Mega Records, Copenhagen — have championed: that great songs still find their audience when real people, not algorithms or gatekeepers, are free to choose them. Zanna Records has tracked the same dynamic across its global radio footprint, now spanning more than 400 stations in over 90 countries.
“A song doesn’t have an expiration date,” said Gianluca Zanna, founder and CEO of Zanna Records. “I wrote ‘Cuba Libre’ in 2005. Two decades later, people in Cuba, Italy, and across the Americas are picking it up on their own and sharing it with their friends. That’s the return of the song — human beings choosing music they love and passing it on. You can’t manufacture that.”
Beyond TikTok, “Cuba Libre” has also been added to playlists on Spotify, reflecting cross-platform organic momentum for the catalog.
